Definition : Prisoner of Society

Due to the recent out roar based on the Verdict’s decision in the Martin v. Zimmerman trial this past weekend, the interns were asked what a “Prisoner of Society” means, and in what ways is George Zimmerman a “Prisoner of Society?”

Intern: Misha Michel

By definition, a prisoner is a person legally held in a prison as a punishment for crimes they have committed or while awaiting trial. By definition, a prisoner is also a person who is or feels confined or trapped by a situation or set of circumstances. On the Saturday night of July 13, 2013 George Zimmerman was found to be “Not Guilty.” Despite the verdict’s decision, many would consider George Zimmerman is now a, Prisoner of Society. A prisoner of society is a person is confined or trapped in their community. Being a prisoner of society comes with rules, regulation, and restrictions.

Even though Zimmerman was found “Not Guilty,” he is considered a prisoner of society because he is not a completely free man to society. Zimmerman will now have to face many limitations, will be watched and judged everywhere he goes. He will be observed twenty-four hours a day – whether he is going outside to take out the trash or going to McDonalds for a quick bite to eat. The people of the world are now watching his every move because some may feel that he is a dangerous man and should have been found “Guilty,” while others may protect him and make sure that he is indeed safe from society.

Zimmerman may have future restrictions in his life such as finding a job, and going out in public for recreational reasons. It may be hard for him to find a job because that any company may judge him based on their opinion on the case and may not find him trustworthy to be a part of their work place. In addition, he may find it difficult to be seen in public because people will most likely threaten him and still perceive him as a dangerous individual, potentially still a harm to society. This may cause many to retaliate in a negative way by calling the police or even resulting in violence/death event.

Whether or not Zimmerman was considered, “guilty” or “not guilty,” his life was bound to change for the worse. Zimmerman’s life will no longer be the same because of society’s emotions, and connection to the case, which will in turn potentially cause future actions and judgmental thoughts against him. Every one of use is considered a Prisoner of Society due to our laws. Above all, it is the type of prisoner you are and how the imprisonment effects you, that will ultimately deem the way in which. Only a true writer can make a free person prisoners of their own society.

By definition, a prisoner is a person legally held in prison as a punishment for crimes they have committed or while awaiting trial. On the Saturday on July 13, 2013 George Zimmerman was found “Not Guilty.” Despite the verdicts decision, many would consider George Zimmerman is now a Prisoner of Society.

After listening to almost all of America’s views on this case from the television, radio and streets, most would believe that he is guilty. It is almost like this man is against the world at this moment. This man is a Prisoner of Society, though technically “free.”

The idea of someone being able to walk away from murder is difficult to take in. A “Prisoner of Society,” is someone who is confined to the gateway of the people. It is being trapped within someone else’s opinions, discernments and thoughts.

Zimmerman took a stand against what society thought was right; because his action is different from the norm of society – it is looked upon as “wrong.” The government deliberately punishes prisoners, but as a prisoner of society, the world, media, strangers, and people from all types of nationalities, or countries become your biggest critic! George Zimmerman is a man who will die as a prisoner of society.

The OJ Simpson case was just as agonizing as this one; even though a lot of people thought he was guilty there was another group of people who did not agree. These people were naïve on the subject matter, and were not sure if this man really killed his wife. Almost the entire country believed the fact that George Zimmerman is a cold-blooded killer. There is a plethora of people who stand by the fact that this man set out to kill an innocent teenager because of his thug-like appearance. Zimmerman had a delusional and judgmental perspective about a young teenager who was wearing a hoodie because it was raining.

Zimmerman put himself on a pedestal by taking action, and now society will always have its critics on a man who is walking free with having committing a murder. As he lives on he will definitely come across restriction and blockades. Society builds onto whatever the world consists of whether it’s enhancing the environment or degrading the ongoing generations. All because society has the power to shift its voice amongst higher authority to make a change in whatever the case is. Zimmerman now has to deal with people in far more difficult ways in order to do many things. His name is notorious in Florida as well as the United States. He will certainly come across a point soon where no business will hire him. Hate mail will begin to fly over to his residency, if it has not already. The newspapers won’t stop publishing articles about him. Gun ranges may even use his mug shot as a target to shoot at. Zimmerman may encounter an actual burglar who won’t give him a second chance.
